Stress Depression Symptoms and Post Partum Depression

When an ordinary, health person experiences stress, the hypothalamus secretes corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH). CRH then triggers the release of certain hormones, which increase the cortisol levels in the blood.

This is important because stress affects blood pressure and blood sugar and the hormone, cortisol, helps maintain normal levels of both. Cortisol levels are not only directly related to the amount of CRH released from the hypothalamus, but the thyroid hormone, which is involved in regulation of mood, is influenced by cortisol levels as well. During the last trimester of pregnancy, CRH is released by the placenta into the mother’s blood stream increasing blood CRH levels to three times the normal what would be considered normal.

After birth and removal of the placenta, the mother’s CRH commonly drops to levels seen in people showing clinical signs of depression. It is generally believed that the excess CRH produced by the placenta suppresses the production of CRH by the hypothalamus. After childbirth, CRH production returns to normal but not quickly enough to maintain emotional stability.

During the two or more weeks that it takes for the hypothalamus to return to a normal level of CRH, the new mother may experience “the blues” — postpartum depression (PPD).

Depression can also be triggered by a stressful personal event such as change of circumstances or loss of a loved one. Short-term depression is a normal means of coping with such situations. However, chronic forms of depression may be caused by innumerable factors.

According to Dr. Rex W. Cowdry, acting director of the National Institute of Mental Health, “When the depressed mood is fixed and pervasive, and severely interferes with normal function, it’s something that should be recognized and evaluated as possibly a separate clinical entity,” (January 17, 1996 NY Times)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) like depression related to child-birth (PPD)  is a specific type of situational depression that occurs in and after an intensely stressful event such as an experience in the military or police services, terrorism, a major accidents, school yard bullying.
